    Description
Ancient Pre-Columbian, Mesoamerican civilization pre-1000 A.D. unusual pottery Effigy Vessel with the burnished surface.
The bulbous body is decorated with a band of incised pattern bottom pierced on the center with a hole. Top surmounted by a hand-built figure of a man, seated with crossed legs, holding in both hands drinking ritual vessel for cocoa drink chocolate - Xocolatl. The figure is nicely adorned with large ear spools, shoulder pads, and bracelets on his wrists. He is wearing a grand headdress with dotted appliques in the form of Cacao (cocoa) beans.
In many Pre-Columbian civilizations, cacao and chocolate played an important part in religious rituals.
The absence of any opening on the top of the vessel except for a small hole at the base suggests that this may have been a rattle shaker musical instrument used by the shaman during the religious ceremonies. The figure was used as the handle of the rattle.
    PROVENANCE:
It was acquired from an old Canadian Collection of antiques and antiquities.
CONDITION: With age patina, the incrustation, and mineral deposits, strongly visible on the surface. Nose chipped, clean breaks on the bulbous body have been stabilized as common with ancient pottery. Overall a great example and a rare type of Pre-Columbian Art.
