    Description

Here's a true pair of antique American pewter candlesticks--7 1/2" high--and featuring the popular "acorn-knob" shaft favored by several makers from New York (J. Weeks) and New England  (TBM, Gleason, Dunham).  The knob on these shafts appears identical to that used as a font for one of Rufus Dunham's signed "sparking" lamps in my collection.  Signed Dunham candlesticks with this style of shaft are usually shorter (in the 6"-range), however.  For some unknown reason, these taller ones have not been reported with a Dunham mark, although I've encountered 2 pairs and several single unmarked examples over the past three decades.   They can be confidently dated, however, to the second quarter of the 1800s.
