Woldo
was a Korean pole weapon that closely resembled the Chinese Guandao (also known as yanyuedao), though proportionally smaller. It was so named because of its curved blade. It and its use methods were described in the Muyedobotongji (“Comprehensive Illustrated Manual of Martial Arts”), which was published in 1795.
Techniques
for the use of this weapon by infantry
are described in the earlier Muyejebo, published in 1749. With the publication of the updated version of this manual in 1791, the dismounted techniques were retained, while techniques for use in horseback were added. The latter techniques are called Masang woldo (
마상월도
,
馬上月刀
).
Woldo
is a majestic and impressive weapon similar in design to the Chinese ‘quandao’, Japanese ‘naginata’ and medieval, European ‘glaive’. At approx 6 feet 6 inches long, and with a curved, moon-shaped blade, the woldo weighs-in at approx 4kg but can weigh significantly more. Even at the lighter end of the scale it is a testing weapon to wield. The size of the woldo is also dependent on the practitioner’s height. A wooden woldo – often shorted for juniors.
Woldo
usually had a spike on the end of the handle, and a feather or tassel attached by a ring to the back of the blade. There was a variant of the woldo, called the danwoldo, which had a bigger blade.
Its blade is moon shaped, with a small blade projecting below the main blade. The smaller blade has a feather tied to it. Although a fearsome looking weapon, it was used primarily for practice among infantry soldiers, having been considered too weak for use in battle.
What is Hyeopdo ?
Hyeopdo
is a spear sword with a 3-foot-long (0.91 m) handle. It resembles the Woldo but with a single, thinner blade. It was rarely used in battle, because it was considered, like the Woldo, to be too weak.
Hyeopdo
(Modern South Korean pronunciation: /ç

p.do/) was a polearm used in Korea. It was also called micheomdo (
미첨도
), which could be translated as 'eyebrow sword' because the curved blade resembled an eyebrow.

The first written reference to a hyeopdo is in a Korean martial arts manual from the 17th century called the  Muyejebo Beonyeoksokjip (
무예예보
번역속집
).
The design varied somewhat between makers, but usually the pole was about 1.5 meters long and the blade was about 63 centimeters long. The blade is single-edged.  It closely resembles the woldo
and the Chinese
pudao
.
Hyeopdo
was considered an important weapon because of its effectiveness. It was much easier to handle than the bigger and heavier woldo. In the Muyedobotongji, another martial arts manual, one form for use is given, called hyeopdo chongbo (
협도총보
,
挾刀總譜
).
History of Woldo Weaponry:
The Korean woldo was a variation of the Chinese guandao. It was originally used by the medieval Shilla warriors, the Hwarang. Wielding the woldo took time due to its weight, but in the hands of a trained soldier, the woldo was a fearsome, agile weapon famous for enabling a single soldier to cut down ranks of infantrymen.
The woldo was continually in use for the military in Korea with various modifications made over the decades.
Korean cavalrymen, usually in the Chosun era, also used the woldo, mainly because it was longer than most other pole weapons and for its heavy striking power.
The Chosun government implemented rigorous training regimens requiring soldiers to be proficient with swordsmanship, and the use of the woldo.
Korean warriors and generals who took military exams to take up high positions in the army had to take an exam that tested proficiency and skill with the woldo
. Those who could demonstrate great martial skill in the use of the
woldo
passed one of the exams and proceeded to the next. Those who could not
were
ordered to withdraw and to train for the next military examination.
Unlike the Chinese with the guan dao, the Koreans found the woldo unwieldy on horseback, and thus, it was specifically tailored to the needs of infantrymen. Though it was never widely used as a standard weapon,
the woldo saw action on many fronts and was considered by many Korean troops to be a versatile weapon. Recently, a contemporary revival in various martial arts in Korea has brought interest into the application of the woldo and its history.
